Jane E. Legler, 83, of Hiawatha, died Saturday evening, May 5, 2012, at her home.

Jane was born at Horton, Kansas, December 9, 1928, one of two daughters of Howard and Edna Lambert Clarke. Jane grew up at Horton where she attended schools, later graduating from Horton High School with the class of 1947. She was a telephone operator for some time with United Telephone Company prior to working at the Horton Garment Factory.

Mrs. Legler was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. She enjoyed sports all through her life: golf, basketball, much baseball. She also loved to get out and drive in the country or town and going to town with a load of friends. In later years, she enjoyed boating and skiing at the lake with her family.

She married Alvin D. Legler, October 26, 1952, at Horton. After their marriage, she was a homemaker until the family was grown. Jane then worked as a book binder for American Yearbook of Topeka where they made their home until returning to Hiawatha in the early 1990’s and again enjoyed being a housewife. Alvin survives.

Also surviving are a son Gary Thomas Legler of Hiawatha; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Linda Kay Geyer; a son Donald Eugene Legler; and her sister Nan Trojovsky.

Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Reverend Randy Quinn will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Hiawatha Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Thursday.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.
